If you want to know what I like coaching most, it's defense. It's the only skill where wanting it beats being gifted. I'm Jordan Fiasco and I've got 14s this year at CVA. The mental side runs a close second. I coach the game as it's played right now — the speed, the systems, and the way this generation of athletes actually learns. The coach I played for, whose system I still use and I compare notes every week, and your athlete gets the best of both of us.
The way I run a session: divided between position work and full-team reps. When your athlete makes a bad error at a bad moment: I give the fix, not the mistake. They already know they shanked it.
On playing time, no hedging: minutes get earned in practice. If an athlete isn't getting them, they'll hear from me exactly what to fix. The awkward part, said early: a kid who wants the spot without the work in practice.
My athletes' one standing complaint is the one phrase I repeat about four hundred times a practice. When I'm not coaching I'm a college student.
Communication, so you're not guessing: open door, one condition: give it an hour after the final whistle.
