Sit through one of my practices and you'll work out my favorite thing to teach. It's serve receive. It separates teams. At younger ages especially, serving and serve receive can determine an enormous percentage of matches. A team that passes consistently can beat a team with much more athletic hitters. Jessica Ritenbaugh here, coaching 12-Blue in my second season at CVA. I've been coaching a few seasons, and every one of those seasons has sharpened how I run a gym. I know these skills from both sides of the whistle — I've played them, and I've studied how they get taught.
You'll see me with 10s too. The club put a second team on my schedule so more athletes get this system. Both teams get the same standard.
That approach has produced this: 8 of 10 athletes came back the following season and my girls finished 17th in the OVR last year out of 181 teams with a 1 place finish at Regionals in the bronze division! .
My team truly has a family culture—we care for and support one another both on and off the court. I’m also known for turning everyday moments into teaching opportunities, helping my athletes grow not just as volleyball players, but as people.
