There's one skill I never get bored of, and it's hitting. It's the most fun thing in the gym and the hardest to pull off when it counts. I'm Jen Dreher and I've got 14-Red and 17-Red this year at CVA. Serving runs a close second. I've been coaching a few seasons, six or more with this exact age group.
This season the club also asked me to take 17-Red. That trust comes from what happens in my gym. Both teams get the same standard.
The way I run a session: built around fundamentals and technical work and high-volume, with a lot of contacts for every athlete. When your athlete makes a bad error at a bad moment: I give the fix, not the mistake. They already know they shanked it.
On playing time, no hedging: minutes get earned in practice. If an athlete isn't getting them, they'll hear from me exactly what to fix. The awkward part, said early: anyone who'd rather not find out what they're actually capable of. Where that's landed: 7 of 10 athletes came back the following season, 6 made high school varsity, 22 went on to play in college and 19 in Premier at AAU nationals/ 12 OVR boys Gold Champs/ 4th in the nation for 12- boys.
My athletes' one standing complaint is my puns. When I'm not coaching I'm a nurse. If you're wondering why I bother: I want to impact the lives of these athletes. I want to make them better on and off the court. I played outside hitter at the Division I level, and I can still demonstrate every rep. A team that plays together, prays together!
Communication, so you're not guessing: open door, one condition: give it an hour after the final whistle.
