I'm Isabel Kays. I coach 13-Black, and this is my second season at CVA. Give me the choice and I'll coach defense every time. It's the one skill where effort matters more than talent. I'll happily spend an hour on serve receive too. I've been coaching a few seasons, and every one of those seasons has sharpened how I run a gym. I trade ideas constantly with our club director — the best coaching in this club happens out loud, between coaches.
Errors in a tight set get handled the same way every time. I don't narrate the error. I give one thing to change on the next ball. If you watch a session of mine, it'll be heavy on fundamentals and technical work and fast, with very little standing around.
I'll also tell you who won't enjoy playing for me: a kid who's comfortable where they are and wants to stay there. Playing time, plainly: I rotate widely early in the season to evaluate, then tighten up for the postseason.
One time I had a player decide to dress up like me for practice and I unknowingly showed up in the same outfit and Hairstyle, they know me too well! My athletes give me grief about my coffee intake. I've made peace with it. The day job: Instructional Aide-Special Education.
Available before or after practice, and respond quickly to brief Questions over the phone. One rule- Post game/tournament conversations will happen atleast 24hr after!
