Brooklyn Leach

Head Coach · 16-Black

I'm Brooklyn Leach, and 16-Black is my team at CVA this season. Sit through one of my practices and you'll work out my favorite thing to teach. It's team offense. When the system clicks, the athletes stop thinking and start playing. I'll happily spend an hour on setting too. I've spent the better part of a decade in the gym, five of them with this age group.

The way I handle a rough patch mid-set: my job in that moment is the next point, not the one we just lost. A practice with me is high volume, with a lot of contacts per athlete and competitive start to finish, with a score on nearly every drill.

I'll also tell you who won't enjoy playing for me: anyone who wants feedback wrapped in cotton wool. That isn't how I work. Playing time, plainly: this is a competitive team. The lineup that gives us the best chance to win is the lineup that plays. Here's what came of it: 7 of 10 athletes came back the following season and 5 made high school varsity.

I started coaching club before I was done playing, because I have such a strong passion for it. There is one thing my athletes will not let go of: how loud I get over a good dig. The day job is a college student. As a player I was a setter at the Division III level, and I still play alumni and pickup games.

Bring me the concern early. February is a bad time to discover it.
